Your drainage system does two jobs, and most people only know about one of them.
Water goes out. That's the part everyone pictures — traps, branches, the main line, and eventually the sewer.
Air comes in. Every drain in the building is connected to a vent system, usually terminating above the roof. Its job is to let air into the pipework as water flows, so that water can move freely and so the water sitting in each trap stays where it is.
Take the air away and the water side stops working properly — even with nothing blocking it. Drains run slowly. Fixtures gurgle. Toilets bubble when a washing machine empties. Trap seals get pulled out, and sewer smell arrives in a room where nothing is blocked at all.
Which means a meaningful share of "slow drain" calls aren't blockages. They're air problems, and no amount of cabling a clear pipe will fix one.

Here's what a vent system is actually doing, and what happens when it can't.
Water flowing down a pipe pushes air ahead of it and pulls a vacuum behind it. Vents let air in to fill that vacuum. Without them, the water either can't move freely, or it draws air from the only other available source — the water sitting in your traps.
A trap is a small bowl of water holding back sewer gas. It works because it's full. Pull that water out and the barrier is gone.
Five symptoms that are usually air, not blockage:
What blocks a vent: leaves and roof debris, birds' nests, ice in cold weather, a vent capped or cut off during a roof or renovation job, and — increasingly common — a failed air admittance valve. Those are the small under-sink devices used in place of a vent pipe on island sinks and awkward locations, and they wear out.
The distinction takes five minutes and costs nothing.
Fill the fixture, then release it all at once. Fill a sink or basin to the top and pull the plug. Watch what happens.

If it starts fine and then slows dramatically, glugs, or produces noise from another fixture as it goes, the pipe is clear and the air isn't getting in. That's venting.
Then check the traps you never use. A guest bathroom, a basement floor drain, a laundry sink — any fixture unused for weeks. The water in the trap evaporates, and sewer smell arrives with no blockage anywhere. Pour a couple of litres of water down it. If the smell goes, that was the whole problem, and it's free.
And check whether the smell is from the fixture or the room. A dry or siphoned trap smells at the drain. A drainage leak smells more generally, and that's a different job.
If the vent test points at air, mention it when you call. It changes what we bring — a roof and vent inspection is not the same visit as a drain cabling.
If it is a blockage, the onset tells you a lot about the cause.
Plunge it properly. Most unsuccessful plunging is too gentle and too brief. Cover the overflow opening on a sink or basin first — otherwise you're moving air through the overflow rather than pressure into the pipe. Make sure there's enough water to cover the plunger cup. Then use firm, sustained strokes for thirty seconds or more. Cup plunger for sinks, flange plunger for toilets.
Refill any trap that's been standing unused. Two litres of water down a rarely-used drain resolves a surprising number of sewer smell complaints, and costs nothing.
Then check the rest of the property. Run every other drain and flush each toilet. All clear means the problem is local to one fixture. More than one slow, or water rising elsewhere when a toilet is flushed, means stop testing and call — that's shared-line territory and adding water makes it worse.
The distinction changes the urgency completely.
Signs: more than one fixture affected, water rising in a shower or floor drain when a toilet is flushed, gurgling as a different fixture drains, or the lowest fixtures in the property backing up first.
Wastewater backs up to the lowest available opening — a basement floor drain, a ground-floor shower, a first-floor toilet. If water is appearing there, you're looking downstream of everything.
Stop using water immediately. Every flush and every appliance cycle adds to what's returning.
Treat sewage as a contamination event. Keep people and pets clear, don't dry-sweep or vacuum residue, and handle cleanup as containment rather than tidying.
Short version: it's rarely the right tool, and it creates a specific problem for whoever comes next.

Cabling. A rotating cable driven into the line to break through or retrieve the obstruction. Fast, effective on hair and solid obstructions, and the right first move on most fixture blockages. Its limitation is that it clears a path rather than a pipe — a cable bores through grease without stripping it from the wall.
Hydro jetting. High-pressure water scouring the full internal diameter. This is what actually cleans a pipe, and it's the appropriate answer to grease accumulation, scale, and recurring main line problems. It needs the line in sound enough condition to take it.
Trap access and manual clearing. Often the fastest and least invasive route at a fixture, particularly for retrieving something dropped.
Vent clearing. From the roof termination downward, for the blockages that aren't in the drain at all.

Commercial kitchens are a different scale of problem. Grease volume is far higher, grease interceptors need servicing on a schedule rather than in response to a backup, and a blocked kitchen line during service is a closure with health inspection consequences.
In multi-unit buildings, stack venting and shared branches mean one unit's symptoms frequently originate elsewhere — and gurgling across several units at once is a strong indicator of a stack or vent problem rather than a blockage in any one apartment.
Scheduled maintenance beats reactive clearing almost everywhere commercially: cheaper per visit, scheduled outside trading, and it produces the record inspectors and insurers ask for.

Pressure changes moving through the drainage system, transmitted through the toilet's trap. Typically a venting restriction, sometimes an early main line symptom.
Yes. If they're slow and backing up, that's a main line problem — stop running water and call. If they're slow and noisy with nothing backing up, suspect venting.
We'd rather you didn't. On a full blockage it can't reach the obstruction, it's hard on older pipes, and it sits in the trap for whoever opens it next. If you've already used it, just say so.
Snaking bores through an obstruction and restores flow. Jetting scours the full diameter and cleans the pipe wall. For grease and recurrence, jetting is what prevents the return.
That usually means an object rather than accumulation — wipes, a cloth, a toy, or something dropped. Gradual decline over months points at grease, hair, or scale instead.
They clear the bowl. They don't break down like toilet paper, and they're a leading cause of blockages beyond the fixture.
For recurring blockages, main line problems, before a significant repair, or when buying an older property — yes. For a one-off hair blockage, no.
If sewage is entering the property, if multiple fixtures are affected, or if it's your only toilet — yes. A single slow drain with everything else clear can usually wait.
